The Department of Community Dentistry of the University of the Philippines College of Dentistry successfully launched the “ANOTHER REASON TO SMILE” book series at the Museo Pambata ng Maynila, Roxas Blvd., Manila last March 10, 2007, Saturday.
The seven-title book series was developed to address the high incidence of tooth decay among Filipino children, through simplified and enjoyable oral health education. It is designed to be an effective teaching tool for parents, teachers and dentists as well. It was made possible through the support of the Philippines Australia Community Assistance Program (PACAP), the official arm of the Commonwealth of Australia for bilateral assistance to the Philippines in social development.
Dr. Luis Gatmaitan, a practicing physician, an award-winning writer of several children’s books and the editor of the book series gave a very interesting keynote address, expressing the spectacular use of children’s literature in health education. Dr. Angelita Galban, the department chair then gave the overview of the development of the series and introduced the project collaborators namely the Community Dentistry 40 students; AKAP-BATA, Inc. (Akap sa Bata ng mga Guro Kalinga, Inc.), the primary beneficiary of the book series; the faculty of the department, Dr. Giselle Yumul, Dr. Lucia Bernadette Herrera, and Dr. Michael Antonio Mendoza; the editor, Dr. Luis Gatmaitan; the book illustrators, Ms. Blessel Marie “Bleps” Carlos, Ms. Mary Louise “Loki” Martin, Mr. John Louie Netro, Mr. Jordan Santos, Mr. Sergio Bumatay and Mr. Ramon Alfonso; and most importantly, PACAP, represented by Mr. Peddie Baclagon, the project officer.
Ms. Cha Chua of Alitaptap Storytellers, Phil. captured the attention of the kids and adults alike, as she told about the story of Kiray in the series’ book #3, “Bakit Umaray si Kiray?”. She stressed out the story’s plot, the characters and even acted out the dialogues. She then evaluated the children’s comprehension of the story by asking questions, which the children answered correctly. This activity set the template of how the books can be effectively used to promote oral health awareness.
Different organizations and personalities were invited namely, the Department of Social Welfare & Development (DSWD-NCR), Center for Autism and Related Disorders, Phils. -PAFI, Philippine Pediatric Dental Society, Inc. (PPDSI), Philippine Legislators’ Action Committee for Children (PLACC), ABS-CBN Bantay Bata Foundation, Zuellig Foundation etc., to inform and develop linkages with other organizations, so that the department’s advocacy goes closer to its goal, that is, promoting oral health in more Filipino communities. The event was covered by ABS-CBN, and was shown on television via ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) last March 15, 2007.
