 The Post Graduate Building of the UP College of Dentistry was built during the term of Dr. Avelino Macasaet as dean in 1985. The three-story structure occupying a 320-sq. meter land area, with a total floor area of 925 sq. meters, is located on Padre Faura St., within the former NEDA Compound. It was designed to house the graduate courses and short training courses.

At present, the regular two-year graduate program in Orthodontics is being conducted in the building since 1989. The first floor houses the administrative office, the panoramic and cephalometric radiography room, and a lecture room. The second floor is occupied by the orthodontics clinics, the patients record section, the supply room, the clinical laboratory, a faculty lounge and a small conference room. The third floor is being used by the College of Allied Medical Professions, which generated funds to finish that area.

GRADUATE PROGRAM IN ORTHODONTICS

 

The Graduate Program of the College of Dentistry offers a Master of Science in Dentistry (Orthodontics).

MASTER OF SCIENCE IN DENTISTRY (ORTHODONTICS)

OBJECTIVES

1. To graduate dentists with sufficient knowledge in the art and science of orthodontics and with proficiency in the clinical and technical skills necessary to render professional and ethical orthodontic service to our people.
2. To produce dentists who are motivated to do research and teach Orthodontics.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

1. Possession of a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DDM or DMD) degree or its equivalent from the University of the Philippines or from other recognized Dental schools 

2. License to practice Dentistry in any of the institutions of  the Philippines.

These qualifications shall be determined through:

a. evaluation of undergraduate credentials
b. character reference
c. interview with the applicant or other appropriate means
d. practical exercises in wire bending

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

The degree of Master of Science in Dentistry (Orthodontics) shall be awarded upon the fulfillment of the following:

1. Completion of the required 54 units and 1200 hours Clinical Practice Conference, plus six (6) units of thesis.
2. A general weighted average of at least 2.0 for item 1.
3. Successful defense of the thesis before a panel of examiners.

No student shall be recommended for graduation unless he has satisfied all academic and other requirements prescribed for graduation. All requirements for the degree shall be completed in not more than five years including leaves.

Practical Training

A. Pre-clinical exercise 
During the first part of the program, an intensive course that introduces the students to orthodontic biomechanics, diagnosis and treatment planning, takes place. 
 
B. Clinical activities 
Clinical instruction uses the attending faculty-resident model. Each patient is assigned to a specific resident who is responsible for the patient under the guidance of his instructor. Each resident performs during his two year training, active treatment on approximately 50 patients (20 original and 30 transfer cases). The main clinical therapy used is the Standard Edgewise Technique. Other methods that may also be applied in limited clinical cases include the Straight Wire Technique and various types of Functional Appliances. 

Research

Each student is required to complete a research project in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the MSD in Orthodontics.

Other Activities

A number of lectures and courses are given every year from speakers all over the world. The guest speaker's program is organized in joint collaboration between the Department, the Association of the Philippine Orthodontics, other scientific organizations and may vary from year to year. The postgraduate students are also required to actively participate as lecturers during the annual Philippine Dental Association Meeting.
