From the Philippine Star
November 21, 2017 issue
MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines (UP) - Manila, the country’s premier state university, and Gwangju Health University (GHU), one of South Korea’s leading health universities, have signed an accord for the setup of a digitally enhanced dental technology laboratory and the exchange of faculty between them.

The Letter of Intent for Cooperation (LIC) signed last Oct. 20 at UP Manila signified the cooperation of the two institutions in seeking a grant from the Korean government for the construction and equipping of a digitally enhanced dental technology laboratory that will further enhance the training of UP College of Dentistry (UPCD) students.

UP Manila chancellor Carmencita Padilla and GHU president Myung Jin Chung led the signing of the agreement.

Padilla said the accord is significant and deep, fusing the technical knowhow and skills of both institutions, adding that “she looks forward to having GHU’s faculty at UP Manila and having our faculty in your university.”

In his remarks, Chung said their government’s assistance is a gesture of gratitude to reciprocate the Philippines’ help during the Korean War decades ago.

“It wasn’t long ago when Korea asked for help and the Philippines was willing to make a sacrifice. Gwangju Health University is proud to enter into (an) agreement today with UP Manila to promote the joint venture to construct a digital dental laboratory to enhance the curriculum at UPCD,” Chung said.

“I am here personally to show my commitment to this project and to meet some old friends for the first time.  GHU has a unique opportunity to share its specialized knowledge and skills to help further develop a leading university in health care. UPCD, a true world-class academic institution, has strong and impressive credentials in dentistry,” he added.

This development has set another milestone for UPCD as it strives to sustain its excellence in providing high quality education for the practice of dentistry as a health service profession.

The UP Manila College of Dentistry Dean Danilo L. Magtanong gives his message to the GHU Contingent.

Tuesday, 17 October 2017

The UPCD Department of Community Dentistry faculty members headed by the Department Chair, Dr. Jessica Rebueno attend the 2017 Association of Pacific Rim Universities APRU Global Health Program Conference. The event will be from October 16-19, 2017 and is hosted this year by the University of the Philippines.
(from apru.org)

This year’s conference theme is “Environmental Exposures & Cancer in the Pacific Rim”, as a large proportion of the Pacific Rim’s cancer burden is related to environmental exposures, including indoor and outdoor air pollution, and occupational exposures.
Dr. Curtis Harris, from the U.S. National Cancer Institute, will present a keynote on research on biomarkers of cancer. Two optional workshops will also be held on October 16th on substance abuse in the Philippines and migration in the Pacific Rim.
The conference will provide leading experts, practitioners, policy makers and early career researchers a critical platform to share latest research and knowledge in relation to prevention of cancer and other non-communicable diseases, environmental health and occupational health. The workshop will conclude with a field trip featuring the UP campus and highlights of Manila.

Congratulations to the UPCD students:  Bea Alcantara, Prissy Dimacali, Diana Dela Pasion &  Paul Adrian Soriano for winning FIRST PLACE in the 31st Annual Meeting of the  (IADR) International Association for Dental Research - South East Asia Division Student Clinician Research Competition held in Taipei, Taiwan.

FIRST PLACE

TITLE: Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Philippine Basketball Association Players of Philippine Cup Season 2016-2017 on Mouthguard Use in Preventing Traumatic Dental Injuries

Beatrice April Alcantara,
Diana Dela Pasion
Priscilla Grace Dimacali
Paul Adrian Soriano
Dr. Arlene Alfaro
University of the Philippines Manila

METHODS:  A cross-sectional descriptive study design utilizing self-administered questionnaires was used to obtain data on the knowledge, attitudes and practices of Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) players on mouthguards as a preventive measure against traumatic dental injuries (TDI). From a total enumeration of a study population of 201 players, 170 respondents (rr=84.6%) were obtained.

RESULTS: Among the players, 91.67% are knowledgeable on mouthguard use in preventing TDI, most commonly because of medical professionals. The most familiar mouthguard was the custom-made type. Only 34.55% of the participants have experienced using mouthguards during their PBA career, most frequently because of advice by a dentist or physician (42.19%) and for protection (43.75%). Reasons for not using are (1) never thought about it (44.04%) and (2) discomfort (43.12%). Among the players, 66.86% have experienced TDI in the PBA. Soft tissue lacerations were the most frequent type of injury, although the sum total of injuries confined to the teeth (n=104 of 113) outnumbered soft tissue lacerations (n=96 of 113). While only 38.41% have a positive attitude towards the PBA requiring mouthguard use, 79.63% have a positive attitude towards educating and promoting mouthguard use among PBA players regardless of history of TDI, preferably by either a dental professional (66.67%) or an athletic trainer (46.51%).

CONCLUSIONS: Almost all PBA players are knowledgeable on mouthguards in preventing TDIs; however, majority have no experience of using mouthguards. Most common reasons for wearing mouthguards are recommendation by a dentist or physician and protection. Most common reasons for not wearing mouthguards are not having thought about it and discomfort. While most of the players do not agree with the PBA requiring mouthguard use, majority are willing to be educated on mouthguard use by a dentist or an athletic trainer.

KEYWORDS: Basketball, mouth protector
